The Moon & Stars – Perth (WA) Observatory
Heading up into the Perth Hills (W.A.) at night we were in for a real treat. Braving the cold winters night the visibility was fantastic, a clear moonlit sky. The friendly staff at Perth Observatory were friendly and passionately shared their knowledge of the night sky. The tour included multiple viewings down powerful telescopes at the moon, Saturn, Jupiter and various stars. The tour was rounded off by a hot chocolate to warm everyone up before we bid our thank yous and goodbyes. Definitely on the to do list, it was just a 45 minute drive from the city, the guides had a brilliant sense of humour and it was very good value for money. As the guides are all volunteers all money raised from tours enables the facility to stay open to the public and for future astronomers.

Mundaring Perth W.A.
Heading out into the Perth Hills brings you to a network of rivers and reservoirs that supply Perth with water. The dam and pump station at Mundaring is a historic engineering achievement. A short drive from the town of Kalamunda the dam has a picnic area, nice walks and informative display. With the backdrop of the national park it is a great location for spotting birdlife.

Wireless Hill
The area of Wireless Hill has a long history of importance. The Noongar Aboriginal people used the hill top as a lookout and to send out smoke signals. After the government stated how important wireless communication was to be, the area was earmarked as an area to build a wireless station. the station was completed in 1912; an engine house, operators house, a windmill and well and residency houses. The 120 metre mast was held in place by wires attached to three concrete blocks. The first radio station of Perth started in September of the same year.
Today the area has been kept as a park and very informative museum, you can climb the tower and get a great view over the river or walk around the park and spot some lovely birds. The museum is open; Wednesday and Friday 10am until 2pm and Sunday 12 until 4pm. Looking for more things to do in and around Perth?

Eco-friendly Travel
We love to travel, but with growing concerns about climate change we want to make our travel as friendly to the environment as possible and reduce our carbon footprint. Contributing to the airlines carbon-offset program passes the responsibility and does it really go far enough. Here are some ideas we have come up with on how to be a more eco-friendly traveller, let us know if you have any ideas we could share.
- Take a reusable water bottle – look out for water fountains in airports
- Take a reusable coffee cup
- Rather than use single use plastic cutlery bowls and plates, take your own
- Invest in a metal straw and say no to single use plastic straws
- Use biodegradable binbags and take your reusable shopping bags
- Making your own food in hostels is a great way to save money, take your own storage containers to save leftovers, this means less use of single use plastic and foil wraps for keeping items fresh.
- Walk, use free city bicycles tog et around or hop on public transport
- Look out for refilling stations in the cities
- Buy loose not bagged on vegetables and fruits
- Look out for second hand equipment, instead of buying new
AND LASTLY – Buy eBook’s not paperbacks – all FLASH PACKERS GUIDES are available to download!
Safe travels.
Forest Red-Tailed Cockatoo
Amazing to see the Western Australian Black cockatoo’s about, my favourite is the red tailed, the female has a lighter orange-yellow coloured tail. They love to hang around in the top of trees and can be found in small groups, although unfortunately numbers are dropping due to loss of habitat. Here are some of our pics of them, so many wonders to see for free!
