The Moon & Stars – Perth (WA) Observatory

Heading up into the Perth Hills (W.A.) at night we were in for a real treat. Braving the cold winters night the visibility was fantastic, a clear moonlit sky. The friendly staff at Perth Observatory were friendly and passionately shared their knowledge of the night sky. The tour included multiple viewings down powerful telescopes at the moon, Saturn, Jupiter and various stars. The tour was rounded off by a hot chocolate to warm everyone up before we bid our thank yous and goodbyes. Definitely on the to do list, it was just a 45 minute drive from the city, the guides had a brilliant sense of humour and it was very good value for money. As the guides are all volunteers all money raised from tours enables the facility to stay open to the public and for future astronomers.

Wireless Hill

The area of Wireless Hill has a long history of importance. The Noongar Aboriginal people used the hill top as a lookout and to send out smoke signals. After the government stated how important wireless communication was to be, the area was earmarked as an area to build a wireless station. the station was completed in 1912; an engine house, operators house, a windmill and well and residency houses. The 120 metre mast was held in place by wires attached to three concrete blocks. The first radio station of Perth started in September of the same year.

Today the area has been kept as a park and very informative museum, you can climb the tower and get a great view over the river or walk around the park and spot some lovely birds. The museum is open; Wednesday and Friday 10am until 2pm and Sunday 12 until 4pm. Looking for more things to do in and around Perth?
