Rottnest Island. The beautiful place a stone’s throw away from Perth, if you can throw a stone 20 km. Once a playground for the people of Perth, it’s fallen out of favour in recent years, as more and more people take advantage of cheap flights to Bali. But there is one huge advantage for Rottnest over Bali: Rottnest is close enough for a day trip.

Getting to the island is relatively easy. Ferries leave from the CBD, Fremantle, and Hillarys. Fares start from around $77 return for an adult, which may be a bit steep, but definitely worth it. In addition, with the right planning, sizeable discounts are often available. The trip takes about 25 minutes from Fremantle, depending on the weather. I recommend not going on a weekend if you can help it: it’s when most day-trippers go to the island, and it’s much quieter on weekdays.
